Portfolio Management is a corporate, strategic level set of processes and tools for successfully prioritizing and coordinating delivery across an organisation’s complete set of programmes, projects and steady-state portfolio entries such as application maintenance and support. Portfolio Management should, by it’s nature, be holistic in that it represents a complete representation of an organisation’s commitment of project resources and investment towards delivering its strategic objectives and steady-state commitments.
Conceptually, IT portfolio management is the quantification of previously inscrutable IT efforts, enabling measurement and objective evaluation of investment scenarios.
The most effective Portfolio Management functions have an ability to establish sophisticated evaluation and selection criteria, create and optimise planning scenarios, rapidly communicate decisions, monitor progress and manage new ideas (concepts through to projects) in one integrated system. This system will form the cornerstone of the effective strategic management of organizational investments, resources and commitments.
The market has a number of tools that fulfil the criteria outlined above to effectively manage portfolios (on top of the core project and programme management governance functions that are central to the time-bound, cost-bound and scope-bound delivery of integrated project activity). The top industry players include:
